Summary of ASJMC programs, projects and activities in 2006-07

2007 convention programming at DC Convention, August 8-12, 2007, including awarding the Gerald Sass Distinguished Service Award to Mark Goodman, Student Press Law Center, and pre-convention workshop on assessment.

Scholastic Journalism Summit — during August 2007 convention, focus is state of scholastic journalism, as well as ideas for best practices in supporting high school journalism on a local level. Proceeding to be published Spring 2008.

Administrators Workshop at the World Journalism Education Congress — ASJMC programmed a standing-room-only workshop for deans, directors and chairs of international JMC programs during WJEC in Singapore, June 2007.

Focus Group of university presidents and provosts —topic of discussion was the role/place of journalism/mass communications education in today's university, funded by John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and McCormick Tribune Foundation, held in April 2007. A focus group follow-up panel for membership was held at DC Convention, August 2007. Full proceeding of both sessions will be published in late fall 2007.

Finished up inaugural JMC Leadership Institute — Finished up 20-month program for new deans/directors, funded by John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Spring 2007

Statement on training adopted by membership via email, state shared with the National Council of Journalism Organizations (of which ASJMC is a member) and adopted by 31 of its members. Press Release issued June 2007.

JLID Program — sixth class garduated and seventh class started, ASJMC co-sponsors this program with AEJMC, ASJMC members serve as mentors to fellows, and speakers for programming, funded by the Ethics & Excellence in Journalism Foundation.

ASJMC 2007 Winter Workshop — “Tomorrow’s Media Today: Preparing JMC Students for the 21st Century”, included sessions for adminstrators and JMC development officers, St. Louis, February 2007

CNJO — participated in the Council of Nationals Journalism Organizations, a Council of more than 60 journalism-industry groups, also includes institute and foundation members, ASJMC Executive Director is a member of the CNJO Executive Committee.

CCA — participated in the Council of Communication Associations, a Council of seven communication associations, including the International Communication Association, National Communication Association, Black College Communication Association, Broadcast Education Association, AEJMC and American Journalism Historians Association.
