richholden Rich Holden to Receive Sass Distinguished Service Award

ASJMC will present Richard S. Holden, Executive Director of the Dow Jones News Fund (DJNF), with its 2010 Gerald Sass Award for Distinguished Service to Journalism and Mass Communication. The presentation will take place Friday, Aug. 6 at a dinner during the AEJMC Denver Conference.

ASJMC is pleased to recognize Holden’s many years of service supporting scholastic journalism and encouraging students to consider journalism careers. He has been executive director of DJNF since 1992. He is the fourth director in its 51-year history. Holden grew the internship programs exponentially in response to changes in media technology, adding business reporting, real-times news wires, online and sports copy editing programs.


chriscallahan Cronkite School’s Dean Named Journalism
and Mass Communication Administrator of Year

Christopher Callahan, dean of the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University, has been named the 2009 Scripps Howard Foundation Journalism and Mass Communication Administrator of the Year.

He will receive $10,000 and the Charles E. Scripps Award for Journalism Administration. The award is given in cooperation with AEJMC to recognize leadership in journalism education. The award will be presented during the keynote session of the AEJMC Conference in Denver Aug. 4. A special session on Thurs., Aug. 5 from 8:15 to 9:45 a.m. will feature Callahan in an administrators’ roundtable.


bobruggles Former ASJMC President Recognized
for Groundbreaking Diversity Work

Robert M. Ruggles, emeritus professor of Florida A&M University, and founding dean of its School of Journalism and Graphic Communication, has been named the 2010 recipient of the Lionel Barrow Award for Distinguished Achievement in Diversity Research and Education. Ruggles served as ASJMC president in 1996-97.

Created in 2009 by the AEJMC Commission on the Status of Minorities and the Minorities and Communication Division, the Barrow Award, recognizes outstanding individual accomplishment and leadership in diversity efforts within the JMC discipline. Under Ruggles’ leadership, the JMC program at FAMU became the first historically black institution to achieve full accreditation from ACEJMC.


Louisiana State University Wins Equity & Diversity Award

The Manship School of Mass Communication at Louisiana State University has been selected as the inaugural recipient of the AEJMC Equity & Diversity Award. Full story.

Website Offers Journalists and Students Training Information

JOURNALISMTRAINING.ORG is a searchable database of journalism training programs. It lists classes, seminars and conventions on a variety of topics, including freedom information, ethics, design, photojournalism, editing and publishing and computer assisted reporting. The site was created in 2003 by the Society of Professional Journalists for the Council of National Journalism Organizations through a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
